Who is the Holy Spirit to the Christian Believer?
Contrary to popular belief, the Holy Spirit is not a force or an influence. The Holy Spirit is a Person.
- The Holy Spirit is a person, just like Jesus and God the Father. The Holy Spirit has His personality, emotions, and will.
It is through the Holy Spirit that believers can experience a personal relationship with God.
- The Holy Spirit is God. He is not a separate entity from God.
He is fully God, possessing all the attributes of God, including omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence.
- The Holy Spirit is a Gift
The Holy Spirit is a gift given to believers by God. In John 14:16-17, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to be with His disciples forever. This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers in the form of tongues of fire.
“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13
- The Holy Spirit is the Helper, Comforter, and Advocate of the Christian believer.
It is through the Holy Spirit that believers are comforted in times of distress, empowered to live a life that pleases God, and guided in their daily faith journey and decisions.
- The Holy Spirit also helps believers to understand the Bible and apply its teachings and principles to their lives.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26”
If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. John 14:15-18
The Holy Spirit is not just a historical figure or a distant memory. He is active in the world today, working in the lives of believers and non-believers alike.
- Holy Spirit convicts people of sin, draws them to God, and transforms their lives.
“And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.” John 16:8 - The Holy Spirit is our intercessor.
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
through wordless groans .” Romans 8:26
Beloved, our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ did not carry out the work of His earthly ministry without the Help of the Holy Spirit and neither did the Disciples and Apostles.
Christian believers and followers of Christ, the Holy Spirit is an essential part of our faith.
We need Him to effectively carry out our God-given purpose and assignment here on earth.
God Bless You
