Fear is the tormentor that torments all mankind irrespective of their race, tribe, religion or educational qualification.
As believers and followers of Jesus Christ, we are not exempted from this deadly tormentor, if we lack the knowledge of whom we are in Jesus Christ as His believers and followers.
In the Scripture, it is written,
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear involves torment . But he who fears has not been made perfect in love”. 1John 4:18
What Are Fear And Torment?
Fear:
This is a natural, powerful and primitive human emotion. An emotion caused by anxiety or the uneasiness of being afraid of something or someone.
Fear is an unpleasant feeling triggered by the perception of danger, real or imagined.
“! Fear is a normal, natural flight response to a danger in our surroundings.” But what happens when it is something more when it is an emotion we feel simply getting into our car, leaving our house or being in a crowd?
Are these feelings of fear normal?
The answer to that is No!
This kind of fear is tormenting and it does not come from our loving Father, God.
Fear torments and perpetually keep its victim in one spot.
Fear is one of the weapons the enemy uses to incapacitate and destroy God’s children.
If the devil wants to cripple anyone, he first shoots the fiery darts of fear.
Fear weakens defences and collapses hopes and aspirations.

The Bible teaches us that fear has torment and that is true. “…fear involves torment . But he who fears has not been made perfect in love”. 1John 4:18
Tormenting fear is the kind of fear Jesus went to the cross to set us free from. It is the crippling fear that brings torment to us. It brings us into the bondage of the devil.
Fear is painful and hurting. A man possessed by fear will go through suffering.
The other Greek word for fear is ‘dellia’ which means ‘timidity’
God has not given us the spirit of dreadfulness. What He has given us is the spirit of power – that is to take control, to take charge, to be in dominion as believers and God’s Children.
I believe that most of us have experienced some fear in our lives.
Fear can be a terrible thing.
Fear can stop us from working, going places, and entering into relationships with others.
Forms Of Fear Are :
- Fear of appearance
- Fear of other’s opinion
- Fear of tomorrow
- Fear of people
- Fear to trust the LORD completely
- Fear of sickness
- Fear of death
- Fear of failure
In life, you will fail. The only ones that never fail are the ones that never try and by definition, they really fail.
Romans 8:15 “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
Because fear is such a powerful dominating emotion, it has always been a preferred tool of Satan.
How To Overcome Fear And Torment
As a child of God, the only way to overcome fear is by countering the spirit of fear with the WORD of God and Faith in God.
In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he explains that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.
“ For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Resist The spirit Of Fear:
Fear is a spirit and a demon. To overcome it as a child of God and a believer of Jesus Christ, you need to stand up boldly in faith in the Name of Jesus Christ and resist vehemently that spirit of fear, tormenting your life and crippling your faith and relationship with God.
In the Scripture, it is written,
“So humble yourself before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
Resisting the devil and the spirit of fear is not something you do smiling.
It takes having a good grasp of the Word of God and knowing your rights and privileges in Christ.
Find out what the Word of God says about that situation, circumstance and challenge that is making you afraid, and the spirit of fear is used to torment and steal your peace.
Ask what are some of God’s promises to you in this verse.
Write a couple of the keywords in the verse on a notecard and put it on a bulletin board or somewhere in your room or work table so that you can see those words and be reminded of God’s care and protection.
Then contend with them in the place of prayer and for sure the LORD God shall give you victory over fear.
Beloved,
Fear! The Tormentor is from the devil. So I say to you,
Fear Not!
Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)
In 366 places in the Bible, it is written: ” Fear Not”.
What you fear most comes to pass fast because you focus all your energy on it to make it happen.
What you believe about yourself becomes your reality in life.
What Job feared most happened to him.
“What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.” Job 3:25(NIV)
Peter had a strong faith in the word of Jesus Christ ‘Come’ and began to walk on water. But the moment he saw the sea was boisterous, fear came, and he began to sink into the same water he walked on.
Peter Walk On Water
… “Lord, if it’s You… tell me to come to you on the water.” “COME,” HE SAID. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. BUT WHEN HE SAW THE WIND, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “YOU OF LITTLE FAITH,” HE SAID, “WHY DID YOU DOUBT?” (Matthew 14:28-31 NIV)
Peter shouted out, “Lord, if it’s really You, then have me join You on the water!” “Come and join Me,” Jesus replied. So Peter stepped out onto the water and began to walk toward Jesus. But when he realized how high the waves were, he became frightened and started to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he cried out. Jesus immediately stretched out His hand and lifted him up and said, “What little faith you have! Why would you let doubt win?” (Matthew 14:28-31 TPT).
Fear sinks you, but faith unleashes the supernatural in you.
Fear has torment.
God has not given us the spirit of fear and torment.
But of Power and of Love and of a Sound Mind 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
Fear comes by ;
What we see
What we hear
What we feel
Faith comes by hearing the Word Of God.
What are you feeding your mind?
Who and what are you listening to?
Remember,
Romans 10:17 – So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
God Bless You
