10 Things To Know About Tithing

10 Things To Know About Tithing: Tithing, a religious practice deeply ingrained in various faiths, particularly Christianity, often sparks curiosity and sometimes controversy. Learning about tithing allows believers to delve deeper into its historical, theological, and spiritual significance.

1. The Origin of Tithing

Tithing finds its roots in the Old Testament. Sacred figures such as Abraham and Jacob offered a tenth of their possessions, signifying gratitude towards God (Genesis 14:20, 28:22).

 2. Biblical Mandate for Tithing

Under the Mosaic law, Israelites were directed to give a tenth of their produce and livestock for the Levites’ support and maintenance (Number 18:21, 24).

 3. Purpose of Tithing

Tithing served multiple purposes: providing for the Levites, aiding the poor, and celebrating God’s bounty. It helped sustain religious services and enhanced communal solidarity.

 4. Storehouse Tithing

In Malachi 3:10, believers are encouraged to bring the full tithe into the “storehouse” to sustain the Temple services and support the vulnerable.

 5. Jesus and Tithing

Jesus’ teachings affirmed tithing but chastised those who neglected justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23). Christ advocated for tithing infused with compassion and love.

 6. Tithing in the New Testament Era

New Testament believers practised generous giving, as seen in Acts 2:44-45, where the early Christian community shared possessions among themselves as each one had need.

In the New Testament it is not mandatory to pay tithe, but paying tithe is an act of service and love to God because it aids the day-to-day running of the Church.

 7. Tithing as an Act of Worship

Viewed from a spiritual lens, tithing isn’t merely a monetary act but a profound expression of worship, acknowledging God as the source of all blessings. Tithing is a spiritual exercise.

 8. Tithing and Prosperity

Biblically, generous giving opens the way for God’s blessings. While Proverbs 3:9-10 promises material prosperity, it’s essential to understand that blessings from God may manifest in different forms, not solely material gain.

 9. Tithing and Generosity

The spirit of tithing nurtures generosity. Whether it is ten percent or more, it’s not the amount, but the intent behind the giving that matters most (2 Corinthians 9:7).

10. Tithing in Modern Churches

Today, churches often encourage tithing to support various ministries—pastoral services, missionary work, community outreach, and maintenance of church facilities.

Dear Christian,

Understanding these ten aspects of tithing broadens our perspective about this ancient practice—its biblical basis, purposes, theological importance, connection to worship, association with prosperity and wealth creation,  and its role in the New Testament Churches.

Tithing, when viewed not as a mandatory obligation but as an act of worship to the LORD God’s generosity, can deepen our spiritual lives, helping us to appreciate our blessings and cultivating a spirit of generosity towards others.
